Reading books makes you live a thousand lives! We all have read books that enlighten us, agitate us or make us feel remorse. Also, there are books that we often connect to, sometimes with the character and sometimes with the situation. Well, in ‘Rains off a Smoky Sky’, we have the privilege to connect to both and realize the façade we live in this world through a woman’s eye. The book is a diary of a woman, Anurita, who has depicted her entire journey of womanhood which could easily be relatable to most women on Earth. The author, Dr.PritamMondal pens down the incidents as if living another Life besides our own, mirroring a Parallel universe. He believes that writing a book is not one man’s contribution, the book required the contribution of many people to fill the blank pages with many experiences.
There is a different kind of involvement with the book when reading a person’s diary. All you know is the person talking to you and you giving all ears without second thoughts and at the same time living the exact moments without making any judgments.
We live in a world where it is overpowered by the strong; when being intimidated by others, the easiest way is to surrender. We humans have always doubted our capability, sometimes we fail to trust ourselves and the success of others demeans us more than inspiring us. The same is the story with the lives of people in a small village in West Bengal. There are a few to stand out from the crowd and aspire to make a difference in their lives and in the society they live in. But then again, fate happens to hold us back at every point, the real demon. This book has been dedicated to all the women who suffer their miseries in silence and accept it as their fate.
While fighting the evils existing in our society, it is obvious to look for a companion who can comfort us at the end of the day but this novel tells us that the companion does not necessarily have to be a human being, after all, it is all about sharing your experiences with someone doesn’t really matter who or what that someone is.
Finally, this book is a perfect blending of two major issues in the world, the struggle of a woman in our society and lack of environmental awareness, consequently, this book gives a beautiful message to think about the environment and encouraging us to practice the thoughts. In this technology-driven world, we need to realize what we are doing to our home, we must realize to protect it.
