Cyclone Remal Causes Chaos in Kolkata: EM Bypass Blocked

Kolkata, May 27, 2024 — Cyclone Remal made landfall on the eastern coast of India in the late Sunday midnight and early Monday morning, bringing heavy rains and strong winds that have wreaked havoc in Kolkata and surrounding areas. The intense weather conditions have led to severe disruptions, including the blockage of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass (EM Bypass), a critical artery for the city’s traffic.

As Cyclone Remal swept through areas of Sundarban, where the areas experienced gusts exceeding 120 kilometers per hour causing maximum damage to the villages in Sundarban.

Impact on the City:

As Cyclone Remal made its landfall yesterday the impact was felt the city with torrential rains, resulting in widespread flooding. Trees were uprooted, power lines snapped, and several buildings sustained structural damage. The city’s drainage system was overwhelmed, leading to waterlogging in many low-lying areas.

One of the most significant disruptions occurred on the EM Bypass, a vital thoroughfare that connects the southern and eastern parts of Kolkata. The road was blocked by fallen trees and debris, causing massive traffic snarls and making it impassable for emergency services and commuters alike. Authorities have urged residents to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Emergency Response:

The West Bengal government has activated disaster response teams and deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel to clear the debris and assist those affected. Emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate displaced residents, and relief materials, including food, water, and medical supplies, are being distributed.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed for calm and cooperation from the public.

Travel Disruptions:

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has reported that the city’s public transportation system, including buses and the Metro, has been severely impacted. Several flights to and from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport have been canceled or delayed. The Indian Railways has also suspended or rerouted several train services due to track obstructions and waterlogging. The flights have been resumed and airports been opened. In case of other public transports citizens will have to face trouble for frequent transportation.

Widespread Power Outages:

The cyclone has caused extensive power outages across the city and its suburbs. The West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) is working round the clock to restore electricity. However, the officials has told that it could take several days to fully reinstate services, especially in the hardest-hit areas.

Meteorologists have forecasted that the cyclone will weaken as it moves inland. Heavy rains are expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The Kolkata Police and KMC are providing regular updates and have set up helplines for emergency assistance.
