It is not always easy to open up about things that are socially unacceptable or issues that are hushed up for the sake of maintaining secrecy but ignorantly that secrecy leads to ignorance and social taboo. It is time that women break the shackles and talk about things that are natural to women. This #HappyToBleedcampaign celebrates the pious menstruation cycle of women which is an indication of health, birth and creation. Read about Pinkey Das’s experience as she shares her experience of her first periods.
As we all know the word period is a great taboo in our society. Most of the girls do not know about it until they experience on their own. When I was small, by looking at the advertisements of sanitary pad I used to wonder what it was; things got cleared when I had my first periods. It was morning, I was having tea and complaining Maa about the abdominal pain. I suddenly felt something warm and wet flowing, rushed to the bathroom and see it was blood. I was scared and thought as to whom I shall share this. It’s normal to feel a little shy about sharing this bit of news. I went to my Di and told her about it. She said it was periods and informed my mother. For the first five days I was not allowed to go to school. I felt uneasy at the beginning, but later when my elder sister explained everything to me, I realized it is a part of our life and we must appreciate it, since this is the source of creation of human being.
