As winter gently unfolds, Chennai prepares to welcome a celebration steeped in warmth, tradition, and timeless culture. Poush Mela arrives in Chennai not merely as a festival, but as a living bridge between memory and belonging. The 4th Poush Mela, hosted by The Bengal Association, T. Nagar, from January 28 to February 1, 2026, transforms the venue into a vibrant village fair—one that echoes the enduring soul of rural Bengal.
Poush Mela is not an event alone; it is an emotion. It is where gaan, gur, goppo, misti, pithe, baul gaan, naach, adda, and the rustic artistry of Bengal converge under one welcoming roof. In Chennai’s streets—especially within the premises of T. Nagar Bengal Association—the Poush Mela sings softly yet powerfully, weaving festive rings of culture and connection.
Gaan, gur, goppo in rhythmic grace,
A small Bengal finds its sacred space.
From January 30 to February 1, the celebration gleams in full spirit, as jaggery sweets, traditional pithe, and rural Bengali handicrafts fill the air with fragrance, colour, and nostalgia. The T. Nagar Bengal Association truly hosts a cultural dream, recreating the warmth of Bengal far from its geographical borders.

Handicrafts Galore:
Step into a world where tradition is patiently woven, moulded, and painted by hand. The mela showcases an exquisite array of Kantha-stitched sarees, dupattas, shawls, Dokra metal crafts, Patachitra paintings, churidars, alongside bamboo and clay artefacts. Each creation tells a quiet story—of rivers and villages, of festivals and generations of artisans preserving Bengal’s heritage through skill and devotion.

Artisan Village & Mukta Mancha
The Artisan Village invites visitors to witness craftsmanship in its most authentic form, while the Mukta Mancha—the open cultural stage—becomes a democratic space for expression. Children, elders, and young artists alike present their talents, making the mela a living cultural dialogue rather than a static display.
One particularly heart-warming initiative was the children’s handicraft stall, beautifully curated under the guidance of Mrs. Arpita. The stall displayed delicate, eye-catching craft items created by young hands—an inspiring reminder that tradition survives when nurtured early.
Handicrafts glow in a Bengali hue,
Stories in clay, in thread, in bamboo.
Folk songs and dances, rhythms divine,
Flavours of pitha and gur that shine.

A Cultural Extravaganza
Music and movement breathe life into the evenings as Baul, Bhawai, and Chhau dances take centre stage, accompanied by local artists, Bengali poems, rhymes, songs, and theatrical performances. Even the Bihu dance of Assam, beloved across Bengal, finds its place—symbolising cultural harmony beyond borders.
Kites soar high, colours splash the air,
Traditional sweets and dances fill the fair.
Notably, the decorative kites adorning the T. Nagar Bengal Association premises during Makar Sankranti—Poush Mela days—were handcrafted, adding a deeply personal and artistic touch to the celebrations.

Bengali Delights Under One Rooftop
No Poush Mela is complete without its culinary abundance. From pitha, puli, jaggery sweets, jaggery rosogolla, phuchka, to Kolkata biryani, egg rolls, and even familiar favourites like burgers and French fries, every craving is honoured. The aroma of nolen gur and freshly prepared delicacies effortlessly transports visitors to Bengal’s winter kitchens.
A Home Away from Home
In essence, the Poush Mela allowed Bengalis living in Chennai for professional pursuits to reconnect with their mother tongue, cultural rhythms, and shared memories. Through language, music, performance, and food, Bengal felt close—intimate and alive.
At T. Nagar Bengal Association, the festive spirit sways,
Poush Mela 2026 lights up winter’s days.
Special appreciation is due to the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and all committee members of T. Nagar Bengal Association, whose dedication transformed the premises into a small yet soulful Bengal in Chennai during this cherished festival.
A Celebration That Lingers
Poush Mela revives the charm of village fairs—where stories unfold over cups of tea, where music rises organically from the soil, and where community comes before spectacle. It reminds us that culture is not preserved in museums alone; it lives in gatherings, voices, shared meals, and collective joy.
Folk songs and dances, rhythms divine,
Flavours of pitha and gur that shine.
Come one, come all.
Join the celebration.
Share the joy together.
Poush Mela awaits—where winter hums softly in festive air.
