Millions of trees are annually planted across India during the National Festival of Trees Planting in India. The festival, Van Mahotsav, lasts for one week (from July 1 to July 7) started in India in 1950 by Minister of Agriculture and Food, Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi. During the first seven days of July, millions of trees are planted across all states of India. It is expected, that every Indian plant at least one tree during the festival. The government of India promotes the celebration of this festival among children, which is why all schools and colleges are supplied with free saplings that also has an educational purpose. During the festival, people learn about the alternative fuel and food resources provided by trees only. Moreover, trees also enhance the beauty of Nature, offer shade and help protect soil to remain strong preventing soil erosion.
