Indian Women creating history at Olympics 2020

Olympics 2020 is becoming more talking spree for Indians with Indian women splurging their efforts on medals!

Gone are the days when the Olympics or any sports event were considered a man’s game. Olympics 2020 at Tokyo is becoming the proving platform for women at large. Let us take a quick tour of our Indian women champions at the game.

MIRABAI CHANU (WEIGHTFTING):

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Women’s 49 kg. With her, India gets her first silver medal in weightlifting. She is a multiple Commonwealth Games medallist who won the World Championships. Her contributions to the sport earned her the Padma Shri award from the Government of India. In 2018, the Government of India presented her with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.

There have been reports that Seuti Films Productions will produce a film about the life of Olympic silver medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. It will also be available in various Indian languages and in English will be the subtitling.

PV SINDHU (BADMINTON):

The Indian shuttler PV Sindhu created history on Sunday when she became the first Indian woman to win two medals in an individual event at the Olympics. According to BAI the chief coach of the Indian badminton team Pullela Gopichand opined, “Congrats to our awesome Sindhu on her 2nd successive Olympics medal. While it is all due to the hard work by her and the team of coaches and support staff, I also want to express my gratitude for the support of the Sports Ministry, Indian Government, SAI and BAI. Also want to thank Govt of Telangana. Great to see badminton win medals in three successive Games”.

Sindhu defeated China’s He Bing Jiao in the bronze medal match at the Musashino Forest Plaza Court 1. PV Sindhu’s mother Vijaya told ANI,

“I am feeling very happy, in Rio, she got silver and this time it is bronze. We are very happy. We have plans, we will celebrate nicely. Yesterday, she was a little upset, we told her to relax and play the bronze medal match to her potential.”

The Indian was in fine form during her run to the finals, defeating Akane Yamaguchi in straight games in the quarterfinal. But her record of going four matches unbeaten ended in a heartbreaking loss to world number one Tai Tzu Ying in the semifinals.

LOVLINA BORGOHAIN (BOXING):

With a medal in the kitty, Lovlina Borgohain is all set to create ripples in Indian history. After Vijender Singh (2008) and M C Mary Kom (2012), she has become only the third Indian boxer to reach the top of the showpiece podium. In addition to winning the first Olympic medal in boxing in nine years, she is now striving to reach where no woman has been before. The national coach Mohammed Ali Qamar told PTI, “since the bout is in the afternoon, we have been training in the afternoon every day for the past two days”. She might be able to utilize this poise against the top seed in the draw, a Turkish opponent who is seeded highest. In her debut at the biggest sporting event, Borgohain has exhibited impressive poise. Additionally, the world championship bronze medallist is no novice either having claimed two medals in her career.
