A 22-year-old girl with a sports career donates liver to save her father

The story is simple – a daughter donates her liver to save her father, but the stereotypes society often is reluctant to indulge in such acts. Pooja Bijarnia, a young girl from Navi Mumbai, has bravely given her liver to her father who was suffering from liver cirrhosis to save his life. India and the embedded values it has in it gets reflected often through such stories.

When the chances of finding a brain-dead donor declines and Shriram B. Bijarnia, Pooja’s father, was at the edge of death bed and only a living donor could have saved him. Finding no option Pooja and her four siblings wanted to donate their liver, it was Pooja who was confident of clearing all the twelve tests before donating her liver. Pooja Bijarnia has been active in physical workouts being a part of her regular regime which helped her donating the liver.

Pooja Bijarnia graduated from the Pillai’s College of Arts and Commerce, pursued her MBA from ITM PGDM and is currently working with Reliance Industries (Jio). Asking her about her future plans she replies, “I love cricket the most and I too played but due to some circumstances, had to leave the game long back. But again, I started with my practice and workouts, until my father’s operation hit us. And now my dream is to work in Sports Management and take the country to a larger level in sports.”

“We both are absolutely fine,” says Pooja to Woman Times, who is more than just happy to be with her father.  She thanked the doctors – Dr. Darius Mirza, Dr. Vikram Raut, Dr. Aabha Nagral and Dr. Suresh – who played a vital role in the surgery. Pooja, through Woman Times, shares her opinion on parents and today’s generation that “It’s high time to take care of our parents instead of sending them to homes and ashrams. We rarely get such opportunities to contribute to our parent’s life and a single chance should not be missed.” On a larger note, Pooja also comments on organ donation is a necessity that all must perform in their lives which can save someone.

This is a message for all who think and feel that girls are burdens. This is also not just about daughters, but for all the children who care for their parents.
