Cyclone FONI, one of the most severe cyclones, makes a landfall in Odisha

Woman Times Desk, Kolkata – Cyclone Fani (also known as FONI) has made its landfall in Odisha that started at 8 am close to Puri in Odisha, with the area recording a wind speed of around 185 kilometres per hour, the IMD said. The process of landfall is expected to continue for the next two hours, it added. The area along Puri is witnessing winds with a speed of 142 kilometres per hour that could reach up to 180-200 kmph, Mritunjay Mohapatra, in-charge of the Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department, was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. FONI or FANI is a form of a cyclonic storm which is named by Bangladesh, which means snake. The

 name is selected by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) from the 64 names suggested by 8 countries that fall under the tropical cyclonic zone of North Indian Ocean. 

The 14 districts which will be adversely affected by the cyclone are – Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Naygarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar. Around 11 lakhs people have been successfully evacuated. Around 500 pregnant women are shifted to hospitals in Odisha and all the sanctioned holidays of the doctors and medical professionals are cancelled in the wake of the cyclone and possible rescue operations.

In West Bengal, it will affect East and West Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Jhargram districts and Kolkata and in Andhra Pradesh, Srikakulam, Vijayanagram and Visakhapatnam districts, an official said.
