KIWC Book Club Hosts Multilingual Poetry Celebration

The Kolkata International Women’s Club (KIWC) Book Club hosted an open mic poetry reading to celebrate poetry in different languages, featuring both published poets and poetry enthusiasts. The event, held at AM PM on Park Street, offered an evening of fun, revelry, and laughter on a weekday late afternoon—a respite from the heat wave, allowing attendees to escape into the world of poetry.

Iryna Vikyrchak, President of KIWC, read her rendition of “Ulysses,” while Elizabeth Decker of Chaitown captivated the audience with her piece “A Trilogy of Trumpets,” inspiring with lines such as “the spirit that glows brighter and soars higher with every torment.” Poet Sreyashi Ghosh also mesmerized the audience with her featured poetry, taking them “Under her Spell” and punctuating “in this nebulous haze to which now I am about to fade, where reality collides with poetry,” incorporating nuances of Raag Yaman to set the evening’s tone. Additionally, Vicky Shiang Chi Huang presented in Chinese, Minu Khaitan in Hindi, and Shirsha Guha recited Tagore in Bengali, further enriching the diverse offerings of the event.

The KIWC Book Club, led by Yukiko Yuasa Yamaguchi and other KIWC members, organized this event. As Iryna aptly concludes in her poem “Anthropology,” “the human music has many voices.” Likewise, KIWC members showcase international women’s voices.
