Paris Fashion Week – A Decade of Celebrations for Indian Designers

Paris Fashion Week – The most prestigious fashion shows in the world, is but for a select few. It is a series of designer presentations held bi-annually in Paris. Spring/ summer and autumn/ winter collections are displayed for the connoisseurs of fashion, with much aplomb. There are ready-to-wear shows, men’s shows and haute couture.

weeks celebrated across the world are the London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion week and the New York Fashion Week. These fashion weeks are an outlet for Fashion Gurus, in the form of resort wear, ready-to-wear, men’s wear and haute couture.

To be precise, two fashion weeks are held in Paris – haute couture shows and ready-to-wear shows. French Fashion Federation is the governing body of this famous fashion event. The Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture is the decision making body to declare a fashion house Haute Couture.

Haute Couture Fashion

This is a style of clothing, where the clothes are totally customised for the wearer. It started out for women of high society. It is high-end fashion and is hand constructed from start to finish. Haute couture fashion wear is made from high-quality, expensive, hard-to-get fabrics and sewn manually. The texturization, embellishments and hems are all done by artisans by hand.

In order to qualify as Haute Couture, members of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture must follow specific rules:

  • The clothes should be solely made for specific client.
  • The workshop should be located in Paris and should employ more than fifteen employees.
  • Should be able to display a minimum of fifty garments each season.

Delhi-based designer Rahul Misra. He recently, exhibited his autumn/ winter ready-to-wear collection at Paris Fashion Week. He received praise from all avenues, due to the usage of Indian handicrafts in a contemporary style. The collection had the age old craft Bandhini (tie and dye), which was used in bomber jackets, coats and other western attire.

Other Indian Designers at Paris Fashion Week

Another Indian designer who has made a mark at the Fashion Week is Tanieya Khanuja. She showcased her collection in Summer-spring 2017. Her collection was presented at Vendôme Luxury, a premium fashion trade show.

John Galliano of India

Manish Arora, the celebrated fashion designer based in Mumbai is the only designer to have completed a decade of showcasing in the Paris Fashion Week. He is known for his colourful, vivacious and artistic creations. Manish Arora started his career in 1997, with his label “Manish Arora” and lunched his second label “Fish Fry” in 2001.  He is famed for his display of psychedelic colour schemes and kitschmotifs that combine the popular/ common/ Indian art forms into western silhouettes.

His accomplishments include, being the Creative Director of Paco Rabanne from 2011-12. The much in demand couturier has tie-ups with various fashion brands like MAC, Swatch, Mercedes and Swarovski crystals. The usage of vivid colours and embroideries struck a chord internationally.

Recent Shows           

At the latest show in Paris Fashion Week, the Chinese emoticon Tuzki, occupied pride of place on all the garments.He showcased t-shirts, dresses, pants, sweatshirts, backpacks, pouches and clutch bags.

For those who do not know, Tuzki is a special rabbit emoticon. The collection shows the various moods of Tuzki. He is shown meditating under the Eiffel Tower in one attire and seen enjoying a glass of wine on another. The Fashion gala ran from 27th February to 6th March 2018, this year. Tuzki’s home country China will be the first to retail the brand, followed by Indian markets.

The base for the garments was hot pink and orange with hearts spread across most garments. The gala event saw Kimono style jackets along with pillow like scarves. The pants were of cinched style and dresses were paired with bomber jackets.The look of the show was definitely Zen, with models wearing colorfully painted block heels.

Indian techniques are greatly in demand at the Fashion Weeks. Constant innovation is the key to conquer global markets; that is the mantra this season.
