Sharmila Biswas, an exponent of Odissi Dance: World Dance Day

In commemoration of International World Dance Day, Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC) presented a three-day extravaganza, bringing together dance enthusiasts and aficionados from all walks of life. Held from April 25th to April 27th, the festival showcased the artistic brilliance of two distinct dance forms: Odissi and Contemporary, through immersive workshops and captivating performances.

The festival commenced with two enthralling workshops of which one was Aranyak. It was about exploring animal movements in Odissi Style. Led by award-winning Odissi exponent, Sharmila Biswas, the workshop delved into the realm of animal movements through Odissi dance.

The week culminated on a high note with the captivating performance Offerings, held on April 27th at the KCC Amphitheatre. Audiences were treated to an enchanting evening choreographed by Sharmila Biswas and her talented troupe. Through mesmerizing renditions such as Aranyak, Mahalakshmi Stotra, Rupantar, and Ananda Moksha, the performers transported spectators into a different realm.

As we leave behind World Earth Day and welcome World Dance Day today! We take a quick dive into Sharmila Biswas, an exponent of the Odissi dance form.

SG: Your inspiration for Aranyak – creatures of the forest.

SB: Game Parks of East Africa and writings of Ruskin Bond. Both are about freedom each life deserves. So very true for Dancers who need freedom to choose dance.

SG: How can women come to the fore more as role models?

SB: Time to think of us as Humans not as women. All humans have baggage to carry and that is equally heavy for every human being.

SG: On this World Dance Day what message would you like to give young aspiring musicians?

SB: Just get up and dance. If your heart sings O D I S S I.

SG: What is your inspiration mantra?

SB: Every day is an inspiration itself. That I am alive and we get one life. Not to waste on frills.
